About this course:
In this course, you will learn power conversion principles and efficiency measurements, discovering how to select the appropriate converter for various battery applications while evaluating system performance in terms of energy efficiency. Gain the knowledge to identify main sources of losses in battery packs, assess the impact of charge and discharge rates on efficiency and capacity, and explore examples of power electronic interfaces, comparing their applications across different scenarios.
This course is available at no cost to participants for a limited time due to EDA grant funding.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate the ability to differentiate between electric charge and electrical energy and calculate the ideal maximum energy content of a battery pack.
- Define coulombic and energy efficiencies, identify the main sources of losses in battery packs, and measure the capacity and energy efficiency of a USB power bank.
- Analyze and compare the impact of charge and discharge rates on battery efficiency and effective capacity, and evaluate the performance of power electronic interfaces in various applications.
- Verify the capacity and energy content of battery systems, and analyze AC and DC coupled system topologies, identifying converter requirements and system energy losses in home battery storage systems.
- Understand the principles of inductive wireless charging, the impact of misalignment, and explore the Wattsun innovation and its potential use cases, reflecting on how these technologies can be applied to improve battery system efficiency and performance.
