About this course:

This is the third course in the Battery Technician Program, offered here individually for those without the time to commit to the full technician program.

In this course, you will be introduced to battery pack construction, as well as battery systems and the specific components used in their construction. You will complete lessons on how to connect battery cells, the components of a battery system, what a Battery Management System (BMS) is, and how they're designed.

*This course is available at no cost to participants for a limited time due to EDA grant funding.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognize series-parallel battery cell arrangements, and how the arrangements change the electrical capabilities of the battery packs.

  • Calculate basic capabilities of a battery from cell arrangement specifications.
  • List the components of any generic battery system.
  • Describe the functionality of each component.
  • Recognize the need for a battery management system.
  • List the set of functions a battery management system should support.
  • Examine Battery Management System solutions on the market and the basic functionalities they provide.
  • Name and classify the hardware subcomponents of a BMS.
  • Identify and describe the advantages and disadvantages of three BMS hardware topologies.
  • Evaluate BMS hardware topologies for the best fit for specific applications.

Lessons in this course:

  1. Series-parallel Connection

  2. Components of a Battery System

  3. Introduction to Battery Management Systems

  4. Battery Management Systems Topologies

Course format:

This online learning experience provides you with interactive content lessons, which include virtual instructor-led video lectures, a downloadable learning guide, non-graded practice questions and a graded final assessment to test your understanding of the material covered in this course.
