About this course:

This is the second course in the Battery Technician Program, offered here individually for those without the time to commit to the full technician program.

In this course, you will be introduced to the basic technical characteristics or specifications of batteries, their significance, and how we objectively determine these specifications. You will have lessons on the total electric charge stored, the total energy stored, how and why we test batteries, and how to pull information from a datasheet.

*This course is available at no cost to participants for a limited time due to EDA grant funding.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define basic vocabulary used for energy storage in batteries.

  • Define an electric charge in Ampere-hours (Ah) and electrical energy in Watt hours (Wh).
  • Estimate the maximum energy content of a battery pack given the rated capacity.
  • Recall the basic definition of battery testing.
  • Recognize the main reasons for battery testing prior to including them in applications.
  • Recognize battery testing properties, and identify the related values in a manufacturer’s battery testing datasheet.

Lessons in this course:

  1. Vocabulary of Energy Storage in Batteries

  2. Battery Capacity and Energy

  3. The Importance of Battery Testing

  4. Battery Definitions, Datasheets, and Characteristics

Course format:

This online learning experience provides you with interactive content lessons, which include virtual instructor-led video lectures, a downloadable learning guide, non-graded practice questions and a graded final assessment to test your understanding of the material covered in this course.
